Alliance for Public Technology Proudly Announces New Contest

'President for a Day - How I'd Change the World With Broadband'

Washington, D.C. – Did you ever daydream about being President for a day? About having the power to change people’s lives - or at least being able to share your ideas with a real President?

The Alliance for Public Technology (APT) launched a brand new nationwide online contest today that will allow people to do just that.

Contestants will have the ability to share their best ideas for using high speed communications technology to address a wide range of issues and problems. Do you need a health care specialist but you live hundreds of miles from the nearest city? How about telemedicine - you can connect using high speed Internet video to a top ranked specialist. You want to participate in a political campaign and have your voice heard? Great, then you can connect to the campaign online or blog on it or send e-mails. You want to have additional income to supplement your retirement? Then, how about using the Internet from your home to start a business and market to the world? Do your kids go to school in a disadvantaged school district without a top library resource for research? Great, just let them research the world's resources on the Internet.

The President for a Day contest will run until July 29, 2008. The winners will be announced in late August and the prizes will be $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place. A panel of APT board members and colleagues will participate as judges in the contest.  Early next year, a policy memorandum of the best contest entries will be sent to the new President.
