2007 Accomplishments
APT is proud to share with you the following highlights and successes of this year to date:
On February 9th, 2007, APT held its annual Policy Forum and Susan G. Hadden Pioneer Awards Luncheon. The Policy Forum featured presentations on extraordinarily successful models for stimulating broadband deployment and demand in Kentucky and Japan and a diverse panel of experts presenting innovative approaches and policy recommendations for achieving universal access to broadband networks and service. (See Forum Highlights) At the Hadden Awards luncheon, APT honored Charles Benton, Congressman Edward Markey (D-MA) and SeniorNet. (See Awards Luncheon Highlights)
APT also launched the Advanced Universal Service Campaign at the February Policy Forum with the release of its 2007 policy report entitled Achieving Universal Broadband: Policies for Stimulating Deployment and Demand.
The first in a series of Brown Bag Lunches around the theme of the 2007 report was held on March 23rd in co-sponsorship with CWA and the Benton Foundation. (See Summary) To attend future brown bag lunches, sign up for announcements on our homepage.
On April 23rd APT and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) jointly sponsored a briefing for Senate and House staff. The purpose of the briefing was to raise awareness of the need for a national policy that will stimulate universal deployment and adoption of high speed telecommunication networks and services. ConnectKentucky (See presentation) was featured as an extraordinarily successful model for achieving that goal.
Expanding on its previous efforts, APT has begun updating its popular Broadband Case Studies report and Survey of State broadband programs for release later this year.
APT has continued to take the consumer lead in keeping the goal of universal access to advanced telecommunications capabilities at the forefront of national policy debate and, thus, into the consciousness of policy makers. On May 16th APT submitted comments to the Federal Communications Commission in response to their Notice of Inquiry (NOI) on Section 706 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, a concept that APT was instrumental in developing. The filing includes recommendations from our most recent paper, Achieving Universal Broadband: Policies for Stimulating Deployment and Demand.
