ABOUT APT
The Alliance for Public Technology (APT) is a nonprofit membership organization based in Washington, DC. and the leading consumer group focused exclusively on broadband and advanced telecommunications technologies.
Its mission is to promote deployment of advanced telecommunications services in order to foster improved and more affordable health care for all citizens, expand educational opportunities for lifelong learning, enable people with disabilities to be more independent and productive members of our society, create opportunities for jobs and economic advancement, make government more responsive to all citizens, and simplify access to technology. By encouraging the deployment of high speed residential broadband services capable of supporting telework, we can also reduce urban traffic congestion, highway construction, pollution, and carbon while enhancing productivity, efficiency, and e-commerce.
Through its membership of consumer and public interest groups, unions, and individuals, some of whom historically have been left out of the Information Age, APT represents millions of Americans, including the elderly, minorities, low-income, rural and urban populations and people with disabilities.
APT receives financial support from membership dues, event revenues, contributions from sponsors and affiliates, and grants.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership is open to all nonprofit organizations and individuals, government agencies and officials and not-for-profit information providers who support the goals of the Alliance.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
APT is governed by its Board of Directors, who make policy decisions based on the impact for APT's mission and goals. The Board members themselves represent a broad cross-section of our population, including telecommunications policy experts, academics and representatives of consumer constituencies, such as health care, labor, education, people with disabilities, minorities, older adults, rural and urban communities and low-income populations. AFFILIATES
Individuals who work full-time in related industries or trade associations may not join APT, but their companies may become APT affiliates. These affiliates provide a portion of APT's financial support, but have no say in the governance of the organization. APT's current affiliates are AT&T, AT&T California, CTIA, United States Telecom Association (USTA), and Verizon.
MANAGEMENT
Operational management of APT is provided through a non-profit association management agreement with Issue Dynamics Inc. (IDI), a public affairs consulting firm. IDI is responsible for facilities and staff support of the Alliance and has no voice in the organization's governance or policy decisions.
